Prepare Your File

Once you’re happy with your design, it’s time to upload it for knitting. In order to do that, we have to prepare a file in a specific format that the knitting factory can use. This means:

Here is a Step by Step Guide

Step 1:

Before starting save a copy of your file that includes all layers. After you complete the following steps your art file will no longer be editable.

Step 2:

Choose Image > Mode > Indexed Color.

Photoshop will ask for permission to merge all layers, confirm it by clicking “Allow”

Step 3:

The Indexed Color dialog box will appear

Change the Palette to “Exact” and Photoshop should show the number of colors. No more than 4 of these colors can be used in your art. 2-3 colors will be used in the factory layer, depending on the product Template. This number should never be more than 7.

For the other fields follow the image below

Select “OK” and the file will be indexed

Follow this video if you are changing Image> Mode> Indexed Color

follow this video if your file is already in Indexed Color Mode

Check Indexed Color Table 2.mp4

Step 4:

File > Save a copy The Save a copy dialog box will appear File Location/Name: Enter the desired name and location for your job Type: Select BMP Click “Save” and BMP options dialog box will appear Choose the settings as shown below

Select “OK” and your file is saved and ready

Please note the following

Correct image size

Each of the templates has a specified file size. The best way to make sure that the file is of the right dimensions is to simply not modify the template you used for making art. If you need a bigger (or smaller) sweater or a blanket, don’t enlarge a template but simply use a one size up (or down) template. Templates are available in various sizes from 3XS all the way to 3XL and everything in between.

Presence of intact factory layer

Every template comes with a special layer that should always be present and on top when preparing the design for knitting. Basically this is the “neon green” layer with various markings. Not even one pixel from this layer can be modified, missing, or modified in any other way. So if you turned it off during design phase, don’t forget to turn it back on before exporting the file.

Correct colors

All the colors present in the image (excluding colors from Factory Layer) must have exact Index values. For example, RGB color 0,0,0 (black) is not allowed, you must use Black from Knitwise Swatch color collection=RGB 9,9,9. RGB 255,255,255 (white)is not allowed instead use Bleach RGB 253,250,250. If in doubt, compare colors in your art with RGB values of available colors from the Knitwise Swatches colors:
