In order to get familiar with the standard file structure used for knitting tasks, lets first try and customize an already premade template. Here’s what we’ll do:

Download this file, open it in Photoshop and arrange it like in the screenshot:

With this, we have finished changing the colors.
Change the image mode to Index by going to “Image / Mode / Index”. Photoshop will ask for permission to merge all layers, confirm it by clicking “Allow” and the Indexed Color window will appear. Change the Palette to “Exact” and Photoshop should show the number of colors as “6” and ghost the input field for number of colors. Make sure the rest of the parameters is set like in the image (basically set everything to “no”):

Confirm the settings and Photoshop will convert the image to Index mode. Navigate to “File / Save As…” and set the file type to “BMP”. Save the image somewhere easily accessible. You should end up with this file:
